AND HSBC NV I paid an account off and the company sold by account to ers saying i still owes the bill

I paid Housebank bank off to Midland collection agency in 2004. I settled this account with them. I thought I was finished with them.
I got a leter in the mail box saying that i now owes ers for the same account I paid off in 2004. I called Midland and ask them about this account and they told me that it was paid off already.
I got a copy of my credit report, it has that it was paid on 1 of my credit report. The other credit report shows that I still owes this. I called them to ask them about this account they said they sold it to a collection agency called midland. Midlands now said that the acoount was paid in full with a settlement which was not reported on my experian credit report. I was trying to buy a car and this is showing that i owe a dedt that is not owed to anyone on this.
