Fraudulent ripp off scam

I recieved a collection notice from this company called AFNI Inc. Stating I owed then almost 493.00 from a Verizon phone bill over 11 years old when I tried to call them all I got was a busy signal, and Verizon wouldnt give me any information. How in the heck are we supposed to verify we paid our bills from 11 yrs ago??? Who keeps reciepts that long, and how to we fight it and keep it off our credit reports.
