Ripoff Collecting on a relative's debt?

About five months ago I received one of those recorded calls we have all received "This is Boyajian Law Offices with a personal business matter... Please contact us immediately at 800-793-2350." And like many of us, I didn't know what it was about because I did not owe any debts, nor had any legal issues pending. After many phone calls, I finally return the call to find that the person on the other end of the line was asking an inordinate amount of questions concerning my identity. The weirdest part of it all was the fact that the calls were coming in on my secondary line into my home that I only use for faxes. I had that number shut off here recently and they just started calling in on a new number I now have for the same type of use. About 3 times so far in the last week.

I was taken aback to say the least and knowing how many fraudulent people are out there I didn't give any info. I found that they were looking for me because many years back my paternal grandfather who has since passed on had an outstanding debt from a major retailer. They were trying to collect this debt from me. I could not figure this out because I knew my grandfather had two step daughters, several grandchildren, and many other family members they could have called. I was told that they tried to contact the step-daughters (my step-aunts whom I have never been close to) who said that I was the correct person to collect from. This was absurd! I never had access to the account, nor I was not listed on the account in any way. I even lived several states away. The representative said that I had two choices pay it, or that I would have a judgement filed against me. They kept asking questions like, "did you receive any money when your grandfather passed away?" and "who else was responsible for paying for his funeral?" I was livid that they would even stoop so low as to ask questions like this. My grandfather died with hardly enough money to pay for his funeral, so there was no "big check" I received, but that is a non-issue.

Going through the family tree, it was my grandfather (passed away), his wife (my grandmother) (passed away), my father (passed away), two step daughters (my step-aunts) who live very close by where my grandfather lived and took care of him, and myself (grandaughter) and my sister (grand daughter).

But regardless, this debt was many moons ago (probably more than 10 years as my grandfather passed away more than 6 years ago. I am just really nervous as to whether they have a right to collect from me or not. Moreover, I am very unsure as to whether to send a cease and desist letter because then they would have my physical address. I don't even have a case number to reference on the letter either.

Most of the posts I have seen here relate to a personal debt. Anyone have this same issue with a now deceased realative that they are trying to collect a debt on? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
