Hit me up for a bad telecom "debt"

The only redeeming thing about this company is that I discovered usacomplaints.com when I googled them. Thanks to the experience I was able to avoid a more recent scam attempt by a firm purporting to offer me a free prize for coming to see them.

I got a letter around Memorial Day from these people, said I owed $135.77 for telecommunications services that I allegedly never paid for. Said the debt might have been reported to the credit bureaus, we haven't filed suit yet, blah blah blah.

The alleged creditor was "Nco/Assignee of Sbc" [sic]. I have had SBC phone service for 6 years and I have never gotten a bill or any type of communication about anything like this from them. (I called SBC afterward and found they had no record of any outstanding debt like this.)

I called them up and the guy told me my name (must have caller ID) and he told me the debt was from March. He would settle the debt right then and there. I hung up on him. He called me back and wanted me to confirm I was disputing the debt so they could take further action. I hung up again.

I was scared because I had never dealt with a debt collector before. But once I googled Boyajian Law Offices, I found this web site and I felt much better. I ended up going to Bud Hibbs's web site and downloaded the cease communications letter, which I sent to them certified mail / return receipt requested.

My wife tells me they call during the day when I'm at work—want to talk to me about an "important business matter." I think they called several times before I got the nasty letter, but I never paid much attention because I always hang up on telemarketers and ignore recorded incoming messages.
