Ripoff dishonest fraudulent collecting

My husband and I were refinancing our house with UFGI and in the process the UFGI said we had a collection from Platinum Capital Investments on our credit report that we had to take care of. UFGI told us they would pay it off with cash out on our loan. I informed UFGI at closing that we did not owe that debt, we had paid it off two years prior through a different collection company (Debt Enforcement Bureau). They said everything would be fine if I showed them proof the next day that I did indeed pay it off. I faxed UFGI a letter from Debt Enforcement Bureau that I paid it and UFGI contacted Platinum Capital Investments who also agreed I did not owe this debt to them. Platinum Capital Investments then sent a letter to UFGI saying that the debt was paid off.in the meantime the title company mistakenly cut a check and sent it to Platinum Capital Investments. Platinum Capital Investments cashed the check and kept it. We contacted them several times to try to get our money back. Each time they agreed that the debt was not owed to them but since the check was made out to them they felt they had a right to keep the money. They also said that they would not give us our money back because they were in the business of collecting not refunding. At this point now the owner (Jay Ledford) of Platinum Capital refuses to talk to us and we were told that our file (with all of the letters proving that we did not owe them money) sits on his desk and that he is not going to read it. Platinum Capital Investments has basically stolen money from us.
