Ripoff calls beginning to "pour in" over $300 debt write off

Business & Finance

Due to a major cut in pay nearly 6 months ago, my husband and i stopped paying on our three credit cards, all of which had balances under $500. We've allowed them to go to collections because we have to provide for our family the basic necessities, but feel absolutely horrible about not paying debt we've incurred. We planned on paying it off just as soon as we get "caught up" from our pay cut.

Well, that was until today. A Nelson Ayala from Cambece Law called and left message on my answering machine for me to call him back regarding a business matter. It sounded too much like a collection call for me to truly take it seriously, so to soothe myself some, because it was on the called ID as a "law" office, i returned the call. I received his voice mail and told him that i would talk to him, but would not do so until he told me what "business matter" this was in regard to and then hung up the phone. Not 15 mins later, he called back and has called approximately 6 times today. After i left the voice mail, I went online to look up the validity of JA Cambece law offices and found multiple reports of people who have been ripped off by this creep! I will not call or talk to them on the phone from this day forward and have sought the help of Bud Hibbs through his website in hopes that he will be able to give me some peace of mind. My husband is a law enforcement officer and we know many attorneys in town that will probably help out. I also noticed that in some states, these "collection agencies" are not licensed to collect debt. Where could i go to find out this info online for the state of Kansas? I have also begun a letter to the Kansas Attorney General and will keep track of how late/early these jerks call my home. I will not pay them a dime and will contact, by mail, their office to request they provide me with some sort of validity of the debt.

My question is, is what they have purchased truly my debt or has that debt been legally written off? Should i be concerned over a credit card that after 180 days past due had a balance of $700 and they will garnish my wages for that amount? What things can i tell them in my letter that will get these idiots off my back? I would appreciate any input that is out there.
