Accepts charges to cancelled credit card account

I closed this credit card account in July. I paid the balance in full, and cancelled, asking for confirmation by letter. I received a letter of confirmation from them a few days later.
No further statements or mailings were received by me until Feb when I was sent a statement for a charge by a motor club. I expected that when I closed the credit card account, that was done, and finished, no further charges would be accepted. I complained to AT&T about the charge, and was told that as far as they were concerned, my account would always be subject to charges at anytime in the future for any amount.
The person I spoke to said it was policy to accept future charges even though the card was cancelled. What part of cancel can they not understand. According to this view, I can still be the subject of fraud without even having a current account. I was told that this is AT&T policy. It may be the same with all other credit cards.
