Shopping Essentials Plus
Unauthorized credit card charges

I found unauthorized charges to my credit card for $14.95 in May, June, July and August. I contacted my credit card company to get additional information since the merchant info on my statement only said "Shopping Club" with a toll-free phone number.

My credit card company had no further details on the merchant other than it was a recurring monthly charge for a "shopping club". I explained I never joined a shopping club, and that I only used this credit card account for on-line purchases. They were concerned my account was compromised so recommened that I close the account, which I did. They credited these charges and will turn matter over to their Fraud Dept.

I called the 800 # on my statement for this "Shopping Club" and learned it was Shopping Essentials Plus. I told the customer service rep that I did not join this club; she said that I did. When I asked how I joined, she said I "clicked on something on Restaurant.com". I have purchased restaurant gift certificates from Restaurant.com, but I never completed any type of application for a shopping club, nor have I authorized use of my credit card for membership fees. I never received any e-mail or regular mail concerning such a membership confirmation. I told her I wanted my so-called membership cancelled immediately and that any charges made to my account credited.

I received an e-mail from Shopping Essentials Plus "confirming cancellation of membership", but no mention of credits. (I'm not concerned with this since my credit card company is handling this matter though their Fraud Dept.)

After doing all of the above, I also read all the other instances on this website of similar charges by Shopping Essentials Plus. I am also concerned about the Restaurant.com site and have cautioned friends who use it to be very, very careful. Their Privacy Policy indicates they do not share personal information, but there is some devious way that this "shopping club" catches users and automatically makes them "members". I plan on contacting Restaurant.com to see if they are aware of this.
