Genus
Debt consolidation ripoff rude, tricked and lied to us. Car delaer said, Genus was the next worse thing we could have done, next to bankruptcy

Business & Finance

I wish I had more information on hand about Genus, as I have had a mess with them for 3 years. I just graduated from college, and got married... And my parents divorced. All those are stress factors that were in my life at the time. My wife and I decided to clip all of our credit cards, and go for the right start, together. We saw a Genus commercial and went for it.

We had good credit, just bought a house... And figured we wanted to consolidate all of our college debts and be free. We both made payments on our cars, and paid 100% of our own college and books... She was also paying for an apartment. We were doing well, for we did this mostly by cash. Yet when we needed credit cards, they just started popping in our mail, as they seem to do all college people. I was crashing 18 hour semesters at the end of my college life, so I could not work as much. There is where the credit cards really started racking up. Yet I paid them.

Genus was talked to, they said they'd get us out of debt in three years. We figured this was "consolidation", what they do is take your payment, and split it across the credit cards... That in turn has lower interest rates because of the use of the firm.

From day one, we had problems, for even though we paid Genus on time, they would constantly be late in giving the payment to the creditors. We called the creditors, and they said they could not talk to us, but to Genus. So we talked to Genus, and they said we had to talk to the creditors about moving the pay date.

Somehow, we finally got through to the creditors, and the pay dates were all set to what Genus asked for. But then the payments got even later.

I expected Genus to finally see that they were messing our credit up (the statements came to us, not them), we never got the same rep... There was one or two that really seemed to try to help. It was a ruckus... But we held on and faxed them our statements... Over and over... Finally got some attention. I thought we'd get back-pay, and compensation, but we didn't get it. "Not company policy, but we are very sorry about this."

When finally dropped Genus, we had a very bad credit... We went to get a car, the saleswoman said that filing with Genus was the next worse thing we could have done, next to bankruptcy. I don't know if that is totally true or not... But our credit is so crummy now... I believe it. We became $2,000 more in debt, and never touched another credit card or took another loan in those close to three years.

While our faith relied on Genus, we gave no more extra money to the creditors, which... We thought they would be compensated when Genus realizes their mistake. When we did batter down the door to Discover, just to talk to someone about our credit... They were very nice with us, and explained that Genus was not the best option for us.

We fell in the gammut of their nice freedom singing TV ads. Now we have finally come out of a true bind. I lost my job during my times with Genus... I just got another job, and things are finally looking up.

I had to write this, simply because I saw no filings about Genus. They were so rude, and even laughed on the phone, until I finally got ahold of sensible reps. That meant hanging up 2 or 3 times and calling back, because you never seemed to get the same person. They had no system of transfering you to another person upon request... Or else that was another one of their strange policies.

To top it off, they talked to me as if I was a low-life bum that got wrapped up in Credit Card woes. I just simply thought it was common sense to go this direction. One more thing... Some of our money wound up missing and unaccounted for...

Well, here you go, a consumer complaints on the company that I thought was an answer to many problems, a panacea for credit problems.
