Scam letter/old utility bill

Being a fraud investigator with a local police agency I was immediately suspicious when I opened an official looking envelope last night.inside was correspondance from Boyajian Law Offices demanding payment for an alleged overdue utility bill.

The letter was sent to my current address and had a real previous address (from 12 years ago), as the location of the utility service. I was advised that the law firm had "purchased your account from said utility company", "All inquiries regarding this account should be addressed to our office and not to the utility company, as they may have no readily available information based on the sale of this account."

I knew right away that this could not be a legitimate collection because the address the utility supposedly provided service was a duplex with 1 meter, and my name had never been on the bill. The bill and service were in the name of the resident in the other side of the duplex, to whom I gave cash every month for our portion of the bill!

The MO is familiar -They threaten to report negative information to the credit reporting bureaus, the amount of the overdue bill is moderate (in my case only $79.55) so you will be inclined to pay it in order to protect your credit rating and no proof of the debt is provided and they advise to only contact them for information.

Beware of this outfit, I have seen similar scams many times and am constantly amazed that people fall for it!
