Has ruined my credit standing, without even trying to contact me

I was outraged this afternoon when I pulled my credit report! I am in the process of purchasing a home and wanted to make sure everything was in top shape. I know there have been times when I have had late payments, as everyone has, but I have been very careful to make sure that everything gets paid. You can understand my surprise when I had a collection account open for over $200.00, that was for a collection that was set up in June of 1999!

I am reading everyone else's horror stories about Van Ru contacting their neighbors, or their place of employement, I would just have been happy if they would have contacted me! I find it outrageous that without any attempts they could post something to my credit report. I had lived at the same residence in 1999 that I had lived @ my entire life, so they cannot say that I was not reachable. We have had the same phone number for 25 years!

If anyone has any advice as to what I can do regarding this, please respond.
