Civil Suit Anyone?

Advertising

About a month ago I moved downtown into a government-protected historic building. Being a historic building, you are not allowed to modify the outside of the building by adding a satellite dish OR cut holes through the interior walls for the cables. When I called DirectTV to tell them that I was moving and couldn't keep my service (has anyone seen the commercials where they say that if you're moving they will move your equipment? Yeh, you have to move the satellite dish yourself, and they will bring the receiver for you. They also charge a huge fee) they told me that I would have to pay a cancellation fee for the remaining 24 months of my contract (also, has anyone seen the commercials boasting about how DirectTV has a no-contract plan? That's what I signed up for). Apparently my plan, which came with no contract and 3 months of free HD, turned into a 24 month plan when I didn't cancel the HD service after the 3 month period (shouldn't they automatically stop the HD service and I have to call if I want it?) I automatically became enrolled in a 24 month agreement that began AFTER the initial 3 months, not as of installation. They also informed me that to skirt the cancellation fees I could have someone come out to determine whether or not I could get satellite reception... There was also a non-refundable fee attached to that. When I told them that the issue wasn't that I didn't have reception (which I don't, I live on the first floor downtown, my windows look at a building 5 ft away, another building 5 ft away, and two trees) but that my building was protected and could not be altered they said they'd call to set up to send someone out anyway... They never did. They also said that they would send a box to return the receiver in so that I wouldn't get charged... They didn't. When I called about the return box for the receiver they said that they had the incorrect address on file for me and that's why I never got a box and was charged. Funny, they managed to send me a $600 cancellation/unreturned equipment bill to the proper address but couldn't send the box to the right place?

I wouldn't be surprised if a civil suit wasn't already in the works over this. I hate to see people lose their jobs, but this company deserves to be closed forever. Horrible.
