Ripoff - Debit Card Phone Scam

I received a phone call about three weeks prior to filing this complaint. A Gentleman, (or so I thought), called to inform me that I had been selected through a marketing research company to fly anywhere in the U.S., up to a $400 value in airline tickets. I was very skeptical at first, and wanted to hang up, thinking this was a telemarketer. The man reassured be that I was selected from a company that I have already done business with. He went on to inform me that he already had my bank's routing and checking account number from a check that I submitted. My check was then selected to win a trip. I figured that it wouldn't hurt to receive information in the mail, thinking that there was no way I would be charged for any membership, without my approval... Wrong. I agreed to receive info in the mail, and the man put me on a recording. He started to enroll me in a membership program that I could cancel within ten days if I did not agree to the program. I specifically remember, while being recorded, that I don't mind receiving info in the mail; however, I DO NOT approve and billing to my checking account. At this point, the man reassured me that I wouldn't be billed. About a week or so later, I received my "free" airline vouchers in the mail, along with a note stating that I had ten days to cancel this membership that I was enrolled in, or else I would be charged the yearly fee. I called immediately and cancelled. A week later, I received a second letter stating that I would be charged $149.00 if I did not call the number below by 4/14/06. I received the mail on 4/18/06!!! Sure enough, when I check my online bank account, there was an attempt to debit $149.00 out of my checking account. Luckily, I did not have the funds available, and was only charged the NSF fee from my bank, $39.50. I called Travel Agents Go Direct and spoke to Faye Scott, customer service extraordinaire. She actually began to argue with me on the phone, stating that there was nothing she could do to help refund my $39.50. She argued that the package was sent out on time, and that I had to take it up with the United States Postal Service. I asked for proof, seeing that there was no date stamped on the envelope package. She stated that they just started to do that, and reassured me that they mailed the package on time, and that her company is not responsible, USPS is. I disagreed, then she persisted that I write a letter to Floridaway Dream Escape. I wanted a phone number. She cut me off so many times, that I had to remind her that I was STILL the customer at this point, and that she was still working in the industry of Customer Service. She responded to tell me that I was "going-off" on her for no reason. I demanded to speak with her Supervisor. Finally, I was transferred to Ann, who gave me the website adress for Floridaway Dream Escape, www.agentescape.com, where I could obtain a phone number, (888.488.8770). I called the number and had their customer service agent repeat to me several times that I would no longer be billed. I didn't go into the fact of demanding my money back that was charged by my bank for insufficient funds, due to the fact that my Bank was kind enough to erase those charges, seeing as it was my first time having to do so. I cannot beleive that these companies are still in business.
