Priceline charges $230 just to cancel a ticket I can't use? - american airline

I needed to reschedule a flight and cancel the other. I had called about using the $252 (before taxes) of the ticket I needed to cancel and use it to cover the $230 fee ($200 for airlines and $30 for priceline) to change the other ticket. Priceline has given me credit on flights before when I couldn't use them (That's a whole other nightmare). NOW it seems it causes $230 to CANCEL a ticket and can't be used towards another ticket. Since when did it become $230 cheaper to just miss a flight rather then cancel way before hand (just under 2 months) when you know you can't go? They are screwing others out of money and in the long run, even themselves because they could of resold that seat.
