Recent flight from Portland to Los Angeles

Recent flight. I had a death in my family and currently working in Portland Or. I had to fly from PDX to LAX.
The ticket was $359.00 one way to LAX which is a little steep for one way. I didn't mind paying that amount because i had to get to Los Angeles. On arriving at PDX i had 1 small bag, so i decided to check it in, not knowing i had to pay $25.00 for the bag. The lady at the desk charge me and then i ask can't i carry that bag on the plane because it so small. She was rude and said know you can't. I have fly united many times and i know what size a carry-on luggage should be. That brings my total to $384.00. Date 1st Aug. Confirmation: FLVVSZ. Flight #6250. Departure time 7:13 pm arriving 9:45 pm. $25.00 refund for my small bag would be real nice. I don't really want to go to better business bureau. Thanks in advance for your kind response. Email.
