Ripoff scam fake contest no such trip companies turning teens into scam artists

I live in Missoula, Montana. 2 weeks ago, I was doing my hair, and heard someone knock at the door. Two kids were talking to my boyfriend, about some trip to Cancun and how they're the first guys to be in first place in a long time, etc., and that all they needed to win was 400 more points, and buying magazines would help them reach their goal. They said it was a fundraiser for a local high school band.

First off, they didn't have half of the magazines I wanted, said they were out of stock, so both my boyfriend and I settled for two magazines that would make for OK reading material... Hot Rod, and Wired. Total cost was for 110.00, written in two seperate checks. They said that "to make sure that people have the money, they don't deposit the checks for two weeks."

Well, it's two weeks later, and now we're short on grocery/bill money, because of this transaction. I called the high school and asked about the promotion, the band instructor said that they do a magazine promotion in the fall, but doesn't use the service listed on my reciept. I called my bank, and asked them what I could do.

They said they could stop payment on both checks for 20 bucks... Because my bank can cancel ranges of checks, it wasn't 20 bucks per check. On the receipt, it says that if the check is returned for whatever reason, they can charge $30.00 as a minimun service fee. The bank may be able to stop those charges as well, I guess we'll find out.

Right now I'm waiting for my boyfriend to get home so I can explain to him what I've found out, and so we can call the bank... Will update when I have more information.
