Identity theft?

Received two letters today from DirecTV for two individuals that have been dead for 6 and 8yrs, respectively.included was a Reference Number for their "expressing interest in DirecTV", but since the credit reporting agency could not find info on them, you were told that a "fee" would be required...

How can these two people (husband & wife) have expressed interest in DirecTV, and where does this Reference Number come from?

I've called their Identity Theft Dept (they are closed today), but after reading these scams, I wondering if I should do anything on Monday, or I'll be charged some kind of bill.
