United Van Lines
Misleading estimate, won't return our stuff

Shops, Products, Services

In preparation for our move from MD to NC, we solicited bids from every major moving company. United Van lines was one of the lower bids (not the lowest, mind you). They came upon this bid by sending a representative to our home to look at our things. That person looked in closets as well as in every room, asked what we would be moving, etc. A couple of days later we got their bid: $2200.

Even though United did not give us the lowest bid, we decided to go with them because they are a national company and because of the delivery schedule.

Fast forward to the day of the move, the driver demands $3089 before he will unload the truck. My company had guaranteed $3000 and we thought we'd have enough to pay the rent after that! I talked with the agent in Maryland and told her, at the very least, I wanted her to drop it to $3000 so that I wouldn't have to pay out of pocket. She did that.

We discovered, just before the movers were going to leave, that a box and a floor fan were missing. The driver told me not to report it because then he'd get fined, I reported it anyway... Duh, if you don't want to get fined, put all the stuff on the truck.

Now, 6 weeks after our move, I had to contact the national office to complain because the local office isn't being responsive (we haven't even heard from them in 2 weeks) and they still haven't delivered our missing things!

I have a law firm ready to sue and will do so if they don't resolve things this week (fat chance I even get them on the phone). How fraudulent can you be to charge $800 over the quoted price because "the weight went over" - isn't that why you came to my home in the first place? To look over the amount of stuff I have so that you could make an accurate estimate?

I wouldn't complain if it was a couple of hundred dollars over, but to try to charge 150% of the quoted price? That's ridiculous.
