Dynamis is falsely advertising its Waste to Energy systems as clean

Dynamis Energy falsely advertizes its Waste To Energy municipal waste combustor facility for Ada County as clean energy. Meanwhile, according to its Idaho Dept. Environmental Quality (IDEQ) application, it plans to emit more mercury for the electricity produced than all but the top ten most dirty coal-fired plants in the U.S., and more dioxin, a potent toxin produced by burning garbage, than 95% of large-scale municipal waste incinerators.

CLAIM: "Dynamis Energy will employ the best available technology and work very hard to reduce mercury air emissions." (http://www.adagreenenergy.com/The-Environment.html).

FACT: Dynamis is reducing their potential to emit mercury level from their samples taken in the 1990s by 70% due to claims that there is now less mercury in the waste stream. This reduction from 64.7 annual lbs will put them under the regulatory threshold of 25 lbs, over which they would have to show use of best available technology, to 19.4 lbs. According to their IDEQ application, they do not plan to install any emission system designed to reduce mercury emissions.

Even at this lowered 19.4 annual lbs, on an electricity generated basis, Dynamis will be among the worst of the worst coal-fired plants in mercury emissions. The comparison is often made in pounds mercury emissions per gigawatt-hour electricity produced. Dynamis is a 20 megawatt plant.

20 megawatts * 1 gigawatt / 1000 megawatts * 24 hours / day * 365 days / year = 175.2 gigawatt-hours.
19.4 lbs mercury / year / 175.2 gigwatt-hours / year = 0.1107 lbs mercury / gigawatt-hour.

Compare this to the 0.026 lbs mercury / gigawatt-hour that the 600 megawatt Sempra coal fired plant proposed for Idaho's Magic Valley would have emitted, but was rejected by locals in 2005 due to environmental concerns. Dynamis would rank among the worst of the worst coal fired plants (# 7 in the worst 50 plants in the U.S.!): see Table 7 in http://www.dirtykilowatts.org/Dirty_Kilowatts2007. Pdf

CLAIM: [Incineration] has negative connotations because during the direct combustion of the waste,
dangerous carcinogenic compounds such as dioxins and furans are formed, which are discharged into the atmosphere.in contrast, the Dynamis Energy Green Technology employs the conversion of waste into syngas,
which can then be used for generating steam and/or electricity... Gasification emissions are generally an order of magnitude lower than the emissions from an incinerator. (http://www.adagreenenergy.com/News-and-Other.html)

FACT: Dynamis is proposing to emit more dioxin than almost all other large scale municipal waste incinerators in the U.S. The 4.262 grams total dioxins (TM-17) per year in their Idaho DEQ application converts to between 0.36 to 0.43 grams Toxic Equivalence (TEQ), which will place them in the worst 5% of municipal waste incinerators that combust more than 250 tons garbage per day. Dynamis has recently claimed a much reduced dioxin level (0.0128 grams TEQ), but will not show sample measurements in support, or lower their permit application to near this level. They do not plan on installing an emission system that is designed to limit dioxin emissions.

See U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) An Inventory of Sources and Environmental Releases of Dioxin-Like Compounds in the U.S. For the Years 1987,1995, and 2000 (Final, Nov).. At http://cfpub. Epa. Gov/ncea

CLAIM: Dynamis will have 'near zero' emissions [appears to have been removed from website].

FACT: In addition to the above, Dynamis proposal to emit smog producing nitrogen oxides (NOx) of 58 tons per year translates into adding 60,000 new cars or light trucks into Boise's inversion prone Treasure Valley, according to the EPAs value of 0.07 g NOx per mile since 2006.

In general, Dynamis recites general environmental benefits for Waste-to-Energy plants at www.adagreenenergy.com, but does not plan on installing the typical emission control systems that allow these benefits. An activated carbon system could significantly reduce both mercury and dioxin, and although these are often installed on municipal waste incinerators, Dynamis does not intend to do so.

Dynamis also plans on emitting significant amounts of toxic metals including cadmium and selenium, and other pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and hydrochloric acid. For Dynamis' Idaho Dept of Environmental Quality Application giving these potential to emit values, see: Dynamis Energy Request for Pre-Permit Construction Approval and Permit-to Construct Application at http://www.deq.
