Shops, Products, Services

Upon browsing Facebook, I came across a store named Other Mothers. I had seen the store before but had not actually stopped to shop there. I read some of the reviews and thought I would go check it out for myself.

The store is a children's consignment shop where you can trade in your children's gently used items for store credit. We had a lot of things lying around that our children weren't using, so we decided to take in a few just to see what the trade in values would be.

The first thing that tipped me off about this store was that in other children's consignment shops I've been into, there is always an employee waiting at the door to assist you in bringing in your trade in items. There was no one waiting at the door and no one even offered to help hold the door open for me when I went out to my vehicle for a second time.

The second thing that didn't seem right was that when you go to trade in your items they give you a slip that on the bottom has two areas of which you are to check one. One option is to have any items they will not purchase returned to you and the other is to have any items they do not purchase be donated to their 0.25 sale that they have two Saturdays out of every month.

Basically, what it boils down to is that if you don't choose to have the non purchased items returned to you, they take them and make a profit off them. Now I was smart enough to check that I wanted the items returned to me and it's a good thing because they didn't purchase the majority of them.

Now, about their trade in policy. You are supposed to get an additional 20 % trade in value if you opt to get in-store credit as opposed to cash. I traded in a Winnie the Pooh swing which I was told would be sold for 26.99 and they gave me and in-store credit of 14.00 for it. Today, I went to their Facebook account and web page where they post their latest inventory and they have the swing I traded in marked at 36.99. This was dishonest on their part and they owe me additional credit.

They are essentially robbing people right in front of their eyes. A person comes in with 100 items, you only purchase a dozen and then take the rest of them to sell (in the event you check to donate non purchased items). What kind of policy is this, how is it loyal to the customers, and how is it even legal?

I truly wonder how many people have actually fallen for this scheme. I would never take anything to this store to trade in again. I could have sold the swing myself on Craigslist or Facebook and gotten a better price for it. I understand trade-ins are how stores such as these operate, but if you are dishonest with and cheat those who do the trading, eventually you aren't going to get in any product.
