Empire Moving Extortion, Rip-Off intimidation tactics, corrupt billing, will hold your belongings hostage

I signed a contract for $847.00 on June 25 for interstate move from Virginia Beach, VA to Chicago IL that would occur on July 8,04. Was told by company rep that pickup would occur between 9am-12pm on July 8,04. Movers showed up at 3:30 in the morning on July 9,04.

Mover refused to give me his last name, was extremely rude to me and my mother and hostile to deal with. My possessions were loaded onto an unmarked truck with no license plates. After items were loaded on truck, I was charged additional for tolls, tape, "fuel surcharge" etc. New balance I owed was now $1518.51.

Was told that the move would take 3-7 days and that I would be contacted 24 hrs in advance. Mover showed up at 6:30 A.M. On July 20 (12 days later) without prior notice; he refused to unload the truck until I had paid in full, including a new $75.00 charge that he asked for in cash for an "elevator fee." This was listed on my contract as free. I told the mover that I would not pay in cash for anything and he became extremely hostile. I was forced to contact the Chicago Police Department when mover drove away with my possessions after I refused to pay the extra $75.00.

All of my boxes had been opened and written on by company; one large box was never delivered. After delivery occurred I was contacted by the company saying that I still owed the $75 and that my credit card would be charged. I was forced to block my credit card from any additional charges from this extremely corrupt organization. Total amount paid to Empire Moving and Storage: $1581.51 for an $847.00 estimate.
