Tomatoes were scanned twice four items apart

Shops, Products, Services

I bought one basket of cherry tomatoes at 2.99 and after I got home and looked at the receipt, discovered I was charged for 2.

I could understand it if the two entries were next to each other (like maybe the checker set the basket back on the scanner after she had already scanned it). But the second entry was made four items later.

The next time I went in I asked a checker for a refund. She said she did not have the capability and sent me to the customer service area. The area was understaffed and I had a very long wait.

They did refund the $2.99. They said they had no idea how that could happen & BUT, they had noticed that happening a number of times at that particular checkout stand.

Now-a-days, with the reduced level of service in grocery stores, there is no way I can watch as the prices are entered and catch the error there.

I'm kept too busy loading items onto the conveyor belt, making sure to put the stick between my order and the next, asking for paper, and scanning the card or writing a check.

That means standing in the store, sorting through the items in the basket, and comparing them to the receipt. What a hassle! But I do it, because with the high volume of errors, I can't afford not to.

My question, to anyone who would care to answer, is: How did it happen that the second cherry tomato entry was made — FOUR ITEMS after the first?
