Fourclosed home work for at least 6 months out in Maine and in Mass

Placed a add on Craigs List looking for contracting services/construction work. They called my husband Robert and he spoke to Nikki she said they had 6 months of work lined up in Maine and in Mass. This would include repair work on homes which had been forclosed on. I called Nikki after my husband learned that there was going to be a 99.00 charge for a back gound check. I checked them out on line and the web site looked very legite and professional.

I gave her my bank account information and she said I would hear from her by Saturday January 21. To date we have not heard anything back and when we try to call them we get answering machine to leave a message and they will call back. WE have left several messages. This is the second time we have placed an add on Craigs list and had this happened. Can someone tell me how we would know if a company is legit and not going to scam...
