Bernard Haldane
Employment Agency Rip-Off

Shops, Products, Services

I won't mention the specific office at Bernard Haldane (BH), because this organization is uniform in its methodologies across all of its offices. BH has one objective: to make money from the candidate, whether or not BH is capable of fulfilling these services or not. For the most part, this company relies on the fearfulness, ignorance, and non-disclosure.

How do they do it?

First of all, they send you an email asking you to take an assessment so that you can "win" a free interview, treating you as though you are "special". The reality is, you are just grist for the mill, and will probably get a phone call based on very little information provided to them.

Second of all, it is critical that they NOT disclose their system to you on the phone (using candidates as clients) because they can't pitch you in person if you reject them in advance. It may be legal (i.E., they haven't accepted your money for services at this point), but it's not particularly ethical. However, the fact that they even exist profitably must be based on an "easily duped" to "rejection" ratio.

Third of all, the reason why you shouldn't contract with an agency like this is as follows:

(1) No one can guarantee that the job the candidate is seeking is attainable and can be produced within a specific timeframe. You are not buying a loaf of bread or even a business solution that has calculated profitability; you are buying a dream.

(2) If a candidate is qualified for an executive position, then surely this candidate knows how to do self-assessments, networking, online searches, and self-marketing... Right?

(3) It is dubious that BH has access to a hidden market when it spends too much time on so-called exercises, rather than producing legitimate unpublished leads. (Some of these questionnaires must have been written by psychotics. If you think that "will try new ideas" is in conflict with "even-tempered", you may be more psychotic than the author.)

In thinking about this a little more deeply, one might ask this: Why would an employer seek out executive professionals who are participating in candidate-pay brokerage? If I were such an employer, I would be wondering why this person hasn't yet figured out how to use other people's money, i.E., headhunters and internal corporate staff. Wouldn't they be considered a possible "risk" to a business which requires of its personnel a certain degree of business savvy?

If you've been caught in this trap, don't blame yourself. You were probably being honest, sincere, ready, willing and able — all excellent qualifications for an excellent job. It's not your fault that there are organizations out there who take advantage of people who are at their most vulnerable or most passionate.

Sincerely,
