Transfer an unpaid account from my ex into my name

I receive a letter from Consumer Energys stating that in 10 days. I would have a 2,318.62 bill transfer to my new account. I called the number on the letter and was told that the bill was from July 07-Aug 08 and that the bill was in my name. I was then told to fax them a letter of my new lease. They didn't say anything about my whereabout between July 07-Aug 08.

I fax Consumer Energys my information. After the 10 days were up I called the toll free number to see what my account balance was. I went from a $39.00 budget plan with them owning me $20.14 to a $234.00 a month plan. They went ahead and put the bill onto my account.

The account was in my ex name, and because I was living with him I was responsible for paying the bill because according to them. I lived with him and benefit from it. I only lived there between Aug 07- Feb 08. Thats only 7 month. They are charging me 14 months. They aren't crediting me when the bills were pay during the months I was there. They estimated the bills so they can't give me an accurate amount.

I believe if it is legal then yeah I'll pay for what I used, but also get credit for what amount was paid for during those months. I wasn't the only one living their at that time so I shouldn't be responsible for the full amount.

I contacted Ms. Darby who told me to fax her proof. I did so and still did not get any answer from her or from anyone from Consumers Energy. I feel that they want their money and they do not care who it is from.

Consumer Energy told me that the bill was in my name and I was responsible to pay for it. But they have a $2,318.62 collection account with my ex. How is it that it is in my name when they are giving him a negative collection? How stupid can consumers energy be? I will not be quiet about this. I will fight this..
