Abbey Road Moving and Storage
Beware of this company and their hidden fees

Shops, Products, Services

I am writing this review based on my recent experience with Abbey Road Moving located in Rockville, MD. I had been planning a move for a few weeks and researched many companies through BBB and many online reviews. I came down to 2 companies.
After I emailed Sivan (the salesperson) at Abbey

Road and did not get a response I called. I spoke directly with Sivan, with whom I originally spoke with to get the estimate. I wanted to make sure there would be no additional charges and that the estimate reflected all their costs. My exact question was Everything is included on the estimate and the only thing that will change is the number of hours, right? Sivan said that is correct and they pride themselves on not having ANY hidden fees. I hired them that day.
The movers showed up on time and started working to pack the truck. I did not hire them to pack anything, only load and unload the truck. Here is where the hidden fees come into play. They wanted to charge almost $500 additional to wrap our furniture, and $5 per roll of tape they used. This confused me, because on the estimate it says furniture wrap is included (it does say use of tape is additional but I had already packed everything so I didnt think it would be necessary). When I had originally spoke with Sivan we discussed this furniture wrap and not once did she say they charge additional to shrink wrap it and box it up before they wrap it in the free wrapping. I believed the furniture would be completely wrapped and it was included in the cost shown in the estimate. I believed it because Sivan said it was that way, not because I assumed anything. We were not moving far, only 20 miles away.
I spoke with the owner of the company who was initially nice, until I started complaining. He said there were no hidden fees and this is a charge they charge everyone. He also said he didnt know what I had discussed with Sivan and would have to speak with her when she got in to work that day. Eventually through numerous phone calls, the foreman on the job said he would only charge us $90. I spoke with Sivan again and she asked what was going on. When I told her he still wanted to charge us $90 she said she would speak with the owner and call me back. I ended up calling her an hour later, when I did not hear back from her. She said everything was worked out and I would not be charged.

There are many other details of the move that were not acceptable. One example is that we were sent 3 workers, however only 2 really unpacked the truck. The third one was setting up our furniture the entire time. It has never taken anyone more than 4 hours to set up 2 beds and screw a mirror onto a dresser. The other workers did complain that he was lazy and never helped. My husband and I ended up helping unload the truck.
Also, I had gone out to pick up bottled water. When you are in the middle of a move, you never have everything you need. When everyone is thirsty I figured I should get everyone some bottled water. When I get back the workers are all drinking tap water from my glasses. Apparently they kept complaining to my husband so he gave them all our breakable glasses to drink from because they couldnt wait another 5 minutes. Well, after they left I noticed one of my glasses was missing. One of my expensive Mikasa glasses!

Upon paying the bill, there was another disagreement with travel time. He wanted to charge something that was different from what I was told travel time would be. Now it is only a difference of 30 minutes, but at this point of the night it is all principle. The foreman got an attitude with me and called the owner. I got to hear his conversation, spoken in another language (which I consider especially rude because I am sitting right there and I should be able to hear what he is saying).
I spoke with the owner on the phone and he was not a nice business owner. He spoke over me and kept talking about how everything was right on the estimate and he has worked with Sivan for 5 years and knows what she says. Ok, now he is calling me a liar. At that point the conversation was over. I said I am getting off the phone now to pay and I am sending your guys back to you, and expect a complaint on BBB. Then he started calming down. He said he really wished I wouldnt do that because they are a good company. Well, after the day I had with them, I would not recommend this company to anyone. They say there are no hidden fees, (that is their favorite quote) yet I had about $500 of hidden fees that were not disclosed specifically on my estimate or during my conversation with their sales person.
Do not hire this company for your move!
