Sunshine Readers - Home Office Magazine Service
Home Office Magazine... Charging for services not received!

Shops, Products, Services

I was awakened one morning by a phone call at around 8am (I work evenings) two years ago and I signed up to get a magazine subscription. I gave my checking account information. I got one set of magazines, not all of the ones I had subscribed to, though, and never got anything else. I called them (using the number from the account debit) and asked if I could cancel since I had not received any of the magazines. They said I had a contract with them for 5 years and that I needed to pay the rest of the contract to cancel the service, a whopping $747. I told them I never signed anything that binded me to a 5 year contract. They said they had my voice recorded agreeing to the 5 year contract. I said that any normal business would only charge for services received, which in my case would only have been for 3 magazines, but they insisted that the 5 year contract had to be paid in order to cancel the subscription (that I never really had). I canceled my bank account to stop the automatic payments, and that worked. I never got charged again. I got bills from them for a while, and then started getting calls from collections agencies, and letters from collections agencies. I have never responded to any of them. I have moved twice since this happened, and I still get letters. How the hell do they know my address? I still have the same phone number, though, but no one has called me since the very beginning so I am grateful for that. Today I got another letter in the mail (last one I received was well over a year ago) and I thought I'd look the company up on the internet since surely I wasn't the only one this could have happened too. So what is one of the top 3 results from google? Usacomplaints.com. Fabulous. So here I am posting my claim. I saw on another forum that someone had a lawyer send Sunshine Readers a letter basically saying that their client is not going to pay for service not received and that they charged their account fraudulently and to cancel their account immediately. They got a check back for charges paid and an apology letter. I have a lawyer in the family and I will be seeking their advice on this. Also, keep complaining to Better Business Bureau and to the Minnesota Attorney General, as I have read that he is quite familiar with this shady company. Good luck!
