In 40 years of dealing with businesses and individuals (I am a minister), I have never encountered any business, or individual for that matter, like GEICO insurance.
They accepted responsibility to insure an inexperienced young driver (with rates commensurate with his risk), and when he made a mistake, and hit my van (was cited by police), I entered the most unethical corridor of business conduct I have ever encountered.
In retrospect, I now see that the repeated requests for the same information; the continuous demand for the same documents, withdrawn, and then at a later date re-demanded (after the time factor became an excessive burden to health care professionals), the entrance of a new claims examiner, who could not seem to find any of the endless procession of already faxed prescriptions, hippa forms, etc., was all a carefully calculated tactic, to push the whole case into the final days of the 2 year statute of limitations, where I would have zero bargaining power.
After filing a complaint with the Ohio State Insurance commission, I was sent a copy of correspondence from Mr. Richard S. Hoagland, Assistant Vice President of Claims at GEICO to the commission, essentially declaring that my health issues were fabricated and excessive, i.E. I was lying about my pain and injuries and was essentially attempting to extort undeserved funds from this innocent bastion of the insurance industry!
As a result, I am stuck with well over $15,000 of medical bills from that 2 year period, and continue to pay out of pocket expenses (over $5,000 2009).
I cannot speak to the myriads of similar complaints about GEICO that I have read about. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT I DO NOT CHEAT PEOPLE, AND I RESENT BEING TREATED AS A CHEATER, ALL THE WHILE BEING CHEATED.
The Ohio Insurance commission essentially said that they may have acted unfairly, but not illegally.
