Global Career Management
Preying on Job Seekers

Shops, Products, Services

I bought into Global Career Management last Spring. I was told the company would "put (me) in direct contact with the hiring authorities" of the companies I requested. I was told they had an inside track on the 85% of jobs that are not advertised. I was told they would customize letters and send my resume to recruiters, headhunters, etc. I was told they had intimate knowledge of growth industries and companies. I was led to believe they did the hard work and I would go to interviews. That's what I paid for.

I was re-entering the job market after 14 years of self-employment. Right off I had a hard time communicating all the things I had accomplished. My "counselor" was no help in that department—I felt I was on my own. The resulting resume was mediocre. The "customized" letters were fill-in-the-blank forms. When I asked for a list of recruiters, I was given 30 pages that I had to contact myself. Most were out of my industry, many were out of business. Only three accepted my resume.

I picked the companies and GCM e-mailed me mailing addresses, some out-of-state, and names pulled off the internet. I printed and mailed letters & resumes, and made follow-up phone calls. After several weeks, I wondered what my $5400 had paid for. (In my experience, GCM does not have a set fee but charges what they think you can afford.)

Every time I voiced my concerns with my "counselor" I received a convenient excuse. Finally, I asked for half my money back. I was told I hadn't worked hard enough, that I interviewed terribly (Funny, not mentioned before), and that I thought they were "scr*wing (me) over because you think everyone is out to scr*w you." (No lie, my "counselor" said that.) I was so shocked I just left.

The Better Business Bureau route went nowhere. Suddenly no one in Seattle would communicate, but various out-of-staters (Colorado) did. I was shocked at the accusations they made about me. At that point, I wanted all my money back. The BBB case ended when they told the BBB they had offered me half back but I refused. Another flat-out lie—they never offered me anything.

Stay away from these people.
