Today, the eBay community includes more than 222 million registered members from all around the world."
The above information concerning the number of eBay members comes directly from their own data. This is a totally skewed figure because many eBayers have multiple IDs counted as separate members.
This figure of more than 222 million is used in the eBay prospectus as an attractant to promote their viability and success. If every member who had multiple IDs were to cancel those immediately, the numbers would drastically effect eBay in promoting their lie to the public and themselves.
As almost anybody knows, a new ID can be created in almost 10 minutes using a Yahoo or Gmail email address. Look at the number of what we call 0 IDs on the blogs who use this ability to hide their face and protect their business.
Since PayPal is a required form of payment basically, eBay needs to require that all IDs be backed up with a credit card or active bank account. Notify all members by email that they have 30 days to apply a financial source or be eliminated. That suggestion has been made before but eBay in it's own realization knows that it would cut their own throat on paper, reducing the advertised total members.
There are some ebayers that have different buying, selling, blogging, discussion board etc. IDs, vastly inflating the membership numbers.in addition, many sellers have multiple stores and have a different ID for each account. Again this inflates the statistics. It is one thing to accurately promote the factual data but to purposely lie to promote their success is unethical and amoral if not illegal.
