Expensive batteries?

I took my daughter to toye-r-us for the first time because she got their $25 gift certificate for christmas. We saw a few good deals and she picked a 3 things that should come out to at least $30 after tax. At the check out I wanted batteries and they were having a sale on only energizer. My husband wanted AAA's for our mp3 players and my daughter needed AA's. Th cashier rang them through after the toys went through (but not yet purchased. The toys were as much as I thought, but when the cashier included the batteries my total came out to $55 from $30. Wtf? The batteries were supposed to be buy one at $4.99 and get one free. Apperently they failed mention that only the AA's were on sale. O.K. So AAA'S are like $20?
