Somehow they managed to obtain our credit card number and make a charge to it

In reviewing our credit card statement, we find an unauthorized charge by Privacy Matters. We've not yet attempted to contact the company, but in researching the charge I discovered (thanks to this site) that others apparently have had this problem.
What is more scary than the unauthorized charge is the fact that this company was able to obtain our credit card information.
