Charitable Book Scam

Shops, Products, Services

I recently had a very personable young woman come to my house selling books in order to raise money for a college field trip. She claimed she was a student at one of the local universities and her English class was going to England for three weeks to work with the BBC on a project that was being produced by John Cleese. Her parents were willing to pay half of the four thousand dollars for the trip, but were requiring that she earn the other half.

She claimed that her family was new to the area, so this job would allow her to meet her neighbors and earn money at the same time. If I did not want the books, I could donate them to a local hospital and her accountant mother would send me a tax form for my write-off. She would even detail my car or do yard work in appreciation for my order. Since she was a student at my alma mater, I was sold and placed a forty dollar order to be donated.

Since I declined her offer to do any work for me, I knew I had no way to determine if she was being honest (unless I got the tax form, which would probably be too late). Therefore, I decided to check out her story on your site. Because it was so much like the others I read, I decided to call the bank to have a stop put on the check and cancelled the order. Your site convinced me that I was probably scammed. Thanks for your help!
