Lies To Sell Additional Long Distance Package On Business Lines phone solicitor false claim long distance usage overage fabricated

Received a call for the "person handling the AT&T account" - after I identified myself as being said person, the solicitor went on to tell me that this was a courtesy call to let me know that we only have a 500 minute long distance package with AT&T and that supposedly is not nearly enough for our business.

He then claimed, we would be looking at MAJOR overage charges on the upcoming bill. He offered that we can enter into an agreement with AT&T to get a 14% discount on those charges or buy a bigger package to get rid of the problem entirely.

I asked who made up those numbers, since I find it odd that two phone lines that are not being used generate any long distance charges at all. He replied "Me" and hung up.

In a phone call to the AT&T small business office I was able to confirm that AT&T indeed has us using a 500 minute per month package and that they are having people calling around trying to sell bigger packages. They also confirmed that we are using less than 5% of our purchased plan and that there would not be any need to buy a bigger plan. Their reply to my complaint of flat out being lied to was to put me on a do-not-call list and a weak apology from the rep.

Not sure if this is illegal, but it is definitely unethical.
