Global Advertising, Midwest Marketing, CQ Non-Profit Organization Advertising Scam

I applied for an Entry-Level Event Cordinator position with a company called Global Advertising. I had found and applied for the job using careerbuilder.com. They sent me an email stating:

"Thank you for taking the time to send us your resume for review. We understand that today's job market can be very competitive and appreciate your interest in our company.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you! Upon review of your resume, you have been selected for a personal interview with our Manager."

I was excited about the interview. Upon arrival, I noticed one other female waiting. There were two females sitting in an adjoining room, talking about their weekend plans. One of them came out and asked me to fill out the top portion of an application, which asked for my name, address, type of car I drive, and interests and hobbies. I thought it was somewhat odd, but proceded to do so anyway.

When the woman was finished with her interview, the "manager" collected my application, cover letter, and resume off the desk and invited me into his office. He did not tell me his name, but went right into telling me the object of the day. He had 37 of these five minute interviews today, and would be choosing 5-6 people for a second full day interview. As we sat in his office, he said his name was Drew. He stated they market, advertise, and event plan for non-profit agencies such as D.A.R.E. America, Toys for Tots, and Operation Smile. I asked what kind of events they set up. He said mostly booths at career fairs and city events like carnivals and festivals. He said they promised their clients they would be expanding their organization and were looking to hire managers they could train in 4-6 months. They were taining their managers in business, finance, event planning, marketing, promotions, and warehouse functions.

He asked me how much I would like to make. I told him between 28-30k a year. He looked at me with a shocked expression and asked if I had a college degree. I stated I have my Bachelors of Science and he said that with my degree that salary would be no problem. He told me to rate my people skills on a scale of 1-10. I told him 10. He said, "What? No room to grow?" I told him there is always room to grow. He checked my phone number and asked me if I would be available at that number atound 5:00 PM because if I were selected, they would call me back. Drew, asked if I had any questions. I told him I researched their company online.

At that point, he spouted off a long web address. That is when I realized something was definitely wrong. I had googled Global Advertising and found what looked like a legitimate worldwide advertising and marketing agency. The web address was not at all similar to the one Drew said they had.

A female called me around 4:30 to congratulate me because I had been accepted for a second interview tomorrow, on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM. I told her that in my first interview, we discussed the fact that I worked part time and I had to be at work on the following day (Thursday), but Friday would be ok. She told me, "That's what I said. Your second interview will be on Friday. Please be here at 9:30 Friday morning."

Before going to the second, all day interview. I decided to find the company's real website. All I came across were job postings for Global Advertising, Midwest Marketing, and CQ Imports. Also, I found a bunch of complaints from job-seekers. Just one complaint would not have turned me away, but there were several complaints. All of them sounded identical to my first interview. Needless to say, I will not be attending my second, all day interview today.

I'm glad I did the research. Now, take my advice and everybody else's advice, don't waste your time with this company. They are a scam and have nothing to do with Toys for Tots, D.A.R.E., or Operation Smile.
