Sprint Nextel
Faking 2-year contract extension to unduly charge termination fees

Shops, Products, Services

I became a Sprint customer in Nov when I signed a 2-year contract for 3 phone lines. I was told I'd be on a month-to-month basis after this period.

As the end of this period approached I started receiving calls from Sprint offering a discount if I renewed for another 2 years. I rejected all such offers because I had already decided to switch to ATT to buy an iPhone.

When I finally made the switch for 2 of the 3 lines and I called Sprint to cancel the remaining line they told me I had agreed to extend the 2-year period more than a year ago, which is utterly false. As "proof" they point out that all invoices since that date showed a $1 discount I had never noticed.

I was consistent and clear on every occasion I as offered a renewal: I will not renew. Somehow, however, they decided to do it for me without my approval. The customer service representative says that a phone call is all it takes for them to renew the contract.

I'm now told I must pay Sprint $200 (!!) as an early termination fee. I was given the "option" of transferring this line to someone else.

I haven't canceled the service yet as I seek hints on how to proceed against this abuse by such a big company. I intend to cancel, of course. Any legal or procedural advice on how to do this is welcome.
