TV Charged my credit card $8.79 for cancelling my 18 mo. Contract 3 days early

I had entered into an 18-month contract with Dish Network. The contract period was almost over and on 1/06/08 I contacted customer services Jeff and was informed that the contract ended 1/09/08. I requested that the contract not be renewed and after the usual question and answer period, Jeff informed me that as the account was paid up there would be no further charges.
On 1/25/08 I noticed a charge for $8.79 from Dish Network on my credit card.in the past we had always received our statements through the mail and paid by check. I called Dish Network customer service and spoke with Nicole who found Jeffs notes and informed me that even though the account was paid in full I requested to terminate the contract three days early and would have to pay the early termination fee. (What I had done was to inform Jeff that I did not want to renew my contract and that I would be canceling the service when the contract expired. He asked why and I replied that we really werent using the service.)
I feel that this is an unfair business practice. Nicole did her best to justify the fee but I feel that I have been taken advantage of. Dish Network was not open and honest about this charge in that I was never informed of the additional fee, and that they sneaked it onto my credit card instead of the usual mailing.
