Asset Acceptance is fraudulant for sure!

These people contacted me for a debt from over 8 years ago. The debt isn't even mine. They initially wouldn't give me any information about the debt other than how much was owed. After explaining that I wasn't going to pay for something that I knew nothing about, they hung up.
After calling back not once, but twice I was finally able to get some more information. It was from an account with SBC (telephone company). I asked why they would want to even try collect a debt that was so old and they said it didn't matter. When I told them it wasn't my debt they said that didn't matter either and that I would have to prove that I didn't owe it! Ha! What a joke. They're obviously hoping to reach a moron or something. Who knows. I told the lady that she would certainly have to validate that debt if she expected any payment from me. Now I'm waiting for some ridiculous print-out from them (no real validation coming, I'm sure.) We'll see.
After looking them up online I can see that they are real trouble. Why doesn't our government do anything to protect its citizens from scam artists like this? The BBB has them down as "satisfactory" even though there are over 800 recent complaints about their collection practices. Just more proof that the BBB is absolutely useless.
I never heard a word about this supposed debt that I owe over the past 8 years. I have great credit. I purchased a home only 2 years ago and never saw squat on my credit report. I've not been hiding. Why are they just now contacting me about this? I'll tell you why... It's a rip-off!
If you are contacted by these people, DON'T AGREE TO ANYTHING. Don't even verify your information. They are scam artists.
Ridiculous.
Fortunately I am on a seasonal layoff and have all the time in the world to deal with this. How unfortunate for the countless other people who have fallen victim to this scam. They should really be ashamed of themselves. If you work for this company, QUIT YOUR JOB. You are a complete waste of skin helping to rip off people of their hard earned money. There are much better ways to make a living.
