Trying to collect charges for unrecognized telephone number from 11 years ago and can't produce information on validity of collection

I received two different collection notices within a week from Afni for two different Verizon accounts. One was a 626 area code, which was not familuar to me and one was a 909 area code number which was my telephone number back in 1997 when I lived in Upland.

I called the toll free number listed on the collection notice to obtain additional information and was told by the Afni representative that Afni could not give me any additional information regarding the collection and that it would be turned into collections if not paid.

I called Afni back about two weeks later and again requested information, such as the street address, and/or dates and types of service that the collections were against. The representative, who was a different person from the first time I called told me that the dates of service were from years 1996 and 2001. I informed the Afni representative that I needed additional information regarding these collections because I had never to this day received any request for payments of past due amounts from Verizon and have had several types of Verizon telephone services since that time.

The Afni representative said they had some documentation for the account from 2001 and they would forward those documents to me. That was about three weeks ago and I have not received anything from Afni.

I can not defend myself against these collections when I have never been contacted prior to this and the collection agency can not provide me with documentation of these charges or prior collection attempts. The alledged debts are over 7 years old and I no longer have records to support my claim of payment or financial responsibility.
