Pressuring to pay for unauthorized publications threatening credit action

Tiffany Jones from International Credit Corporation called me to tell me that I had ordered a publication titled, "What's New in Benefits and Compensation?" from Progressive Business Publications and hadn't paid for it. Since PBP had not received payment, they turned it over to this company for collection and a court action was going to be filed against me and my company if this bill wasn't paid.

As "proof" that I authorized this purchase, she gave me the month and day of my birth, stating that's all PBP needed. She was not able to provide any record of what I supposedly authorized and told me that PBP doesn't retain any verbal records after they turn it over. I got her phone number so I could do some research and call her back.

After I saw all the complaints filed against this company, I called Tiffany Jones back and told her I would not authorize payment because I didn't order the publication. She told me PBP had the verbal records and she would get them and call me back. I haven't heard back from her.

From what I've read, this is a common operation with this company. I'm very careful never to authorize any kind of purchase over the phone like this and I know I didn't do so in this case. I don't know how she got my birthday information, but I don't believe it's sufficient evidence to pay a bill.
