Vonage
Ripoff fees fees and more fees for a service I can't even use

Shops, Products, Services

I decided to try Vonage. Big Mistake. I never could get it to work well enough for anyone to understand my phone calls. Contacted Vonage. They claimed the problem was my internet provider. I contacted my provider and they did all they could to peak my modem. After numerous attempts at reconfiguring my set up, and moving it from one part of my home to another I finally gave up. Most people described my Vonage as the worst cel phone they had ever heard, others couldn't describe it because they couldn't hear me at all.

I called Vonage to cancel my service, (I should tell you I had to reconnect with AT&T in order for Vonage to understand my call.) I explained I was unable to use my Vonage and wished to cancel. I was told I would have to pay a $50.00 equipment recovery charge if I canceled now, but if I waited until I had had my service for 4 months I wouldn't have to pay this amount. They said because I was unable to use the service they would give 1 month free, and drop the monthly service to $4.99 per month. The customer rep stated that I would only be paying half of what cancelation at this time would cost.
I agreed to this idea. My $4.99 monthly bill turned out to be $7.99 a month, and when my 4 months was up I called again to cancel. I was told I had to keep my service until August 9th (6 months) in order to avoid the equipment recovery fee. After quite a discussion regarding their inept employees I agreed to wait until August 9th. On August 9 th I called to cancel my service. I was told there would be no equipment recovery charge, but there would be a $39.95 cancelation fee if I discontinued service before October. I told them this was the first I had heard of this cancelation fee. The representative, by the name of "Trece", said it was clearly noted on my account that each representative I had spoken to had noted they had told me of this charge.
When I asked to speak to his supervisor he told me he was the supervisor there. He then started telling me how to improve my service by purchasing and installing splitter jacks between my modem and telephone. He also told me when I needed assistance with my equipment I should ask for "tech support" in New Jersey, because the other techs didn't really know what they were talking about.

My entire 7 1/2 months of Vonage have been a total disaster. All the Vonage equipment was uninstalled and put on a shelf back in February.incompetent support staff, and no one who knows how to be honest. I take heart from reading the other comments posted here. I know I'm not the only one getting screwed by Vonage.
If anyone deserves a class action lawsuit, and government intervention it is Vonage.
