Return Policy unfair ripoff

I bought a Hoover bag less vacuum (the yellow canister one) back in January. I have the receipt and the vacuum is in great shape. I only used it 3 or 4 times. I still have the receipt in pristine condition and they refused to give me my money back (or store credit) because it was over 90 days; which would have been April 21. I told them why it took so long to bring it back. The 1st time I used it it didnt work very well. Its one of those all suction vacuums and doesnt prod the carpet to pick up anything extra. It also had an odor when used. I thought the more I used it the better it would get. I thought due to the great shape it was in and still having the receipt they would take it. But, NOPE! I just think that after the 90 days it should be return on case by case basis. What if I had given this as a wedding gift and the happy married couple were just getting to opening their gifts or something. I think the policy is unfair.
