Ripoff unethical garnishment of checking account

I received a writ of garnishment today from King County District Court stating that Alliance One was taking $972.55 from my checking account. This is the first communication I've had from Alliance One in many years. This matter was resolved at least 6-7 years ago. (or so I thought) It's so old that Alliance One doesn't even show up on my credit report.

I was never informed of a hearing. How can they legally get a writ of garnishment against me without me having a chance to respond to the charges? At the very least it's unethical. As a result the money is already being held by my bank. Which will result in a car payment and car insurance payment check bouncing. And rent won't be getting paid now either.

This is going to cost me a lot more than $1000 once all the bounced check and late fees hit. Not to mention the damage to my credit. They were paid long ago and now I don't understand where this $972 is coming from. How can they get away with this? Do I have any recourse? I plan to seek out an attorney come Monday. Which means missing a day of work.

I'm stressed out, can't sleep. And I'm very upset. The money is important but it's the principle that is really bothering me. Help.
