Billed Near $400 for Service Never Ordered After ID Theft

Sometime ago, my ID was stolen from my purse, and it was reported as a theft to the police department. Some months later, I received a bill from Direct TV stating I owe close to $400, and they were demanding payment.

Right away, I contacted them, and they transferred me to several departments. Finally, some department said they would do an investigation. In the meantime, they wanted copies of my bills (insurance, light, gas and water bill, telephone - anything with a physical address during the time in question). They asked for the police report and some more stuff.

I mailed them everything they requested. They received my mailings and continued to redundantly ask for the same material 4 or 5 times. I was exhausted by the repeated mail-ins and really couldn't figure out the purpose. I explained to them that my personal information, including my social, dv. license and more, was stolen... and up pops a bill for some service I never ordered or received at my address.

I asked them to track down the service guys, and that's when they told me they had no idea because they subcontracted. They asked me to mail in a request for the investigation... I did it all...

Let's just make a long story short - they have contacted a lawyer to receive a payment from me for charges incurred by someone else. I simply refused to pay something I had no affiliation with! I am really disturbed about all this. I wish I had a lawyer or some great legal advice. I wish Direct TV could even pay for all of my mental pain and suffering, and for all those requests for me to repeat mail-offs, scanning through every drawer in my house to find papers... It took away valuable family time and added more stress to my blood pressure problems, as is...

I wish someone could help me with this one... I feel all those guys want is their money, and they don't care who they get it from... even if that means the victim, myself of course...
