Ripped off they are in need of $200.00 by hook or crook

My contract with Altel had ended by some months. One day I called to pay my bill and was asked if I would like a new phone for only $20. I figured why not the only catch is it would sign me up for another two years. I hadn't had any problems so figured why not. A month after I received my "new" cell phone it didn't work. After taking it back to them twice they gave me another phone.

2-3 months go by when all of a sudden I get another call that they needed me to return the phone or pay $160.00. I hadn't done anything to the old phone but for some reason they are trying to say I did. I was so mad I wanted to cancel my contract and this would cost me $200.00.. I took the phone they had given me to the store and droped it off.

Calling customer service the manager was rude and horrible she was ready to put me in for the $200. Drop off slot. I sure wasn't going to pay them $160. For a phone I didn't break! And why do I owe them $200. If I cancel a service when I was tricked into it by taking a crummy phone that didn't work? I still have over a year to be with them. What can I do?
