Sells defective merchandise

I purchased a clock from this store. When I got home, after inserting batteries (more than one set, just to be sure), I discovered that the clock didn't work. The next day, I went back to this store, clock and receipt in hand, and said I would like to exchange it for another. The owner refused, saying that the sign states "all sales final". I said I understood, but the clock did not work. I simply wanted a clock that worked, not even a different model, just one that works, because that's what I thought I had paid for!
The owner starts raising his voice, saying "how do I know you didn't drop the clock? I'm not exchanging it, or giving you a refund". He went on to say that he doesn't even make a profit, and that it was my problem. I told him he is guilty of selling defective merchandise.
It's not the lousy $2.00 I spent on the non working clock, it's the principle of the thing!
