RIPOFF waived termination fees not done-going to debt collection

I don't know whether you would investigate this - but I thought it was worth telling you about.

I live in an area that was hard hit last year by Hurricanes Frances and Jean. Before Katrina - we thought it was the worst ever. During the hurricanes-cell phone service is awful. We tolerated it and managed.

By February Nextel's cell tower had to come off a condo bldg in our town because the bldg was being gutted. Our cellular service got worse! We continued to faithfully pay our cellphone bills though. But by August it was not better.

We called Nextel for advise. Their customer service representative implied that because of the lack of service from the removal of the cell tower-it was reasonable to assume that switching to another carrier would be ok. Others in my neighborhood had their fees waived.

I asked what the procedure was and if penalties would be imposed. He said that given the circumstances-probably not. WELL - of course the two key words here are: assume and probably...

Now October 31-Nextel has declined waiving the termination fee and wants to charge me $900.00. If I do not pay by Nov 14 it will be sent to debt collection and my credit history will be affected. I am only one person of thousands who are getting this corporate screw. What is a consumer to do? What are my rights? Why can they do this? They can't provide cellular service-yet I am expected to pay for it.

I asked for their corporate address - wouldn't give it to me. I asked for Chairman of the Boards' name and address - wouldn't give it to me. They claim they are right and I am wrong. Where is customer satisfaction? What are my choices? Can you imagine how many people this year are in the same cellular phone screwover??? Your input and excellent investigative reporting is appreciated. We feel used. Nextel is a bully. I was a faithfully paying customer since 2001
