I contracted with Russell Henderson to handle a legal filing back in February this year. I was given his name through a mutual acquaintance, so I had a bit more faith that Henderson might be one of the few lawyers who were not inefficient moneygrubbing liars.

It's been almost five months since our initial meeting. Since that time, the only contact I've had with Henderson has been a letter, notifying me of the remainder of the fee that I owed him. (It all goes back to his hand in my pocket!).

Yet when I've tried to contact him via telephone or written letters, there is dead silence. No voice mails are returned, no letters are even acknowledged. The odd thing is the check I sent Henderson for payment has remained uncashed on my account for the past three months. Since Henderson refuses to contact me, I don't know if he's even received this check. I am hesitant to put a stop payment on this one (could be an unnecessary expense) and issue another, payable to him.

As for my legal representation. At the initial conference, he assured me there would be a court date set and he'd make the court appearance; I wouldn't have to do so. After three months and no word of the case's progress, I did some Internet research. Turns out the court date had been set but Henderson had opted NOT TO ATTEND! Again, no word to me about any of this.

He's not even on his deathbed, as I'd wondered. Our mutual friend has confirmed that friends of theirs have seen Henderson having lunch at a local restaurant.

It's not bad enough that when one is in difficulty, lawyers are the only ones who benefit from it. Now, it seems they can't even be relied upon to provide resolution — I have another issue to deal with.

Shakespeare was right: First we kill all the lawyers.
