False warranty, unwillingness to stand behind your product

I received a gift card for christmas and purchased a Bissell Clear View Steam Machine. I was so excited. I cleaned the carpet in my living room, which is 12feet by 15feet. I was very satisfied with the job it did. I changed the water and proceeded to clean my dining room...

This is where everything went wrong. I used the hand wand to clean the 2 steps that go from my living room to my dining room. After cleaning one step the machine made a high pitched, whining noise and all suction and water spray stopped. I unplugged the machine, checked all the hoses for kinks, blockages, or other damages. I looked under it, in it, and all around it to see if I could see any reason why this noise was occuring and I found nothing.

I called the Bissell Company at the number listed on the warranty information. They told me that since I had only purchased the machine 3 days prior I should return it to the store, K Mart in West Duluth, Minnesota, and exchange it for another one. Keep in mind that I live 45 miles away. I drove to the store and their customer service employee told me that I needed to contact Bissell.

I told them I had. They told me there was nothing I could do because I bought it on sale and the product was last years model and they did not have any more. I left, called Bissel again and they told me that they trust the merchants that carry their products to deal with these matters, so I was on my own. Now I still have this thing in my house and the only fuction it serves is as a door stop.
