Yesterday, I was approached by a man driving a large, new SUV, which he said was a rental. He claimed he was Italian and needed to get to John Wayne Airport for a flight back to Italy. He said he was lost and needed directions.
I asked him what he was doing in this area, and he mentioned he had been at the Mission Viejo Mall on business at Nordstrom. This sounded really strange to me because I was parked at a soccer field in the back of a strip mall in Laguna Niguel, about 5-10 miles from that mall, and there were no other cars or people around.
He said he was from Milan and then showed me his Italian passport, which was probably a fake. As I started to give him directions to the airport, he said he was in the clothing design business and had some "sample" leather jackets to show me. He showed me two jackets and said he couldn't pay the shipping back to Italy because the shipping price was too high. Then he offered to "give" me the jackets for free. He put them in a large tote bag and handed them to me.
Then, he showed me another leather jacket, which he said would fit my wife. I said it was way too big for her, and he suggested I could have it altered to her size. He then said he had a big house in Milan and that if I came to Italy, I could stay with him and his family.
Having been to Milan many times, I asked him about a very expensive restaurant there that I liked. He said he hadn't eaten there but had heard about it. I had made up the restaurant name, so I knew he was lying. Then he gave me his business card and asked me for money to "help him out a little bit." I told him I had no cash and that I really didn't want the jackets. He grabbed the bag, got back into his car, and drove away. I was certain this guy was a scammer.
